Our first two training days took place on the 13th and 14th of July. Both days were fully booked with four students on each day. The tutors were Mark Sanger and George Foweraker with each student having the use of a variable speed lathe, all the tools, materials and safety equipment needed for a whole days turning.
The tuition days cover a structured format with the first day for each group being cross grain bowl turning. Emphasis for the tuition days is placed on the safe use of the lathe and tools while producing a shallow bowl.
On both days the students arrived early to a cup of tea, biscuits and a safety briefing. Once completed each student donned a full face mask, then took to the lathes. It was not long before the bottom of four bowls were being shaped and the floor filling with wood shavings. Each student was shown the correct way to present and use each tool through each stage of the process. Both George and Mark were at hand to help with any issues as required.
The idea was for each student to make a shallow open bowl, this being the easiest of the forms to make. It was soon apparent that each student had their own individual ideas about what a shallow bowl should look like which enabled each to explore their own ideas.
By the end of the day numerous bowls had been produced with all enjoying the day and wanting to come back again.
